Mega Moolah pays back 88.12 percent through its reels and 93.42 percent once the jackpot pools are counted. The 5.30 percentage points between those two figures are the price of the lottery ticket stapled to this slot, and they are also what made a British soldier 13.2 million pounds richer in one spin. I score it 5 out of 10.

This is a 2006 Microgaming slot, now under Games Global, on five reels and three rows with 25 paylines. The base game is deliberately plain. Everything interesting happens on a jackpot wheel that appears at random and cannot be summoned, bought or influenced by anything except betting more.

Below is what those two return figures actually cost you in euros, what the wheel looks like from the inside, and the one record win that every page about this game quotes without putting it in proportion. Start with the section on the trade, because that is the decision you are really making.

Mega Moolah at a Glance

Games Global does not publish a math sheet for this game, so the Mega Moolah RTP below was cross checked against independent databases. Where those databases contradict each other I have printed all of their answers rather than picking one.

What it isThe figure
Return through the reels88.12%, the figure almost every site quotes on its own
Return including the jackpots93.42%, the complete figure, and the one this review scores
Diverted to the jackpot pools5.30 percentage points of everything you stake
House edge6.58% once the jackpot money is counted as returned to players
Studio and yearMicrogaming, now Games Global, released 28 November 2006
GridFive reels, three rows, 25 paylines
Stake range0.25 to 6.25 a spin, which is unusually narrow
JackpotsFour, seeded at 10, 100, 10,000 and 1,000,000
How jackpots are wonA wheel that appears at random, with twenty segments and one Mega
Maximum win outside the jackpot225,000 coins, 11,250x or 1,800x, depending on which source you read
Hit frequencyNot published
Wheel frequencyNot published
Bonus buyNone, and nothing in the game is locked behind a counter

How to read this. One source gives three different answers for the maximum ordinary win on the same page. That is not me being pedantic, it is the state of the public record on the most famous jackpot slot ever made.

The Score, and What Went Into It

Casinos on this site are scored on four published criteria and so are games, on four of their own. Each is marked out of ten and the average is rounded to a whole number, with a half rounding up. Where a studio publishes nothing a criterion can be built from, I leave it unscored and average the rest. The bands are published in my scoring method.

CriterionScoreWhy
Return to player2 / 1093.42 percent including the jackpot pools, which lands in the 92 to 93.99 band. Scoring the 88.12 figure instead would punish the game twice for money that is genuinely returned to players
Cost of reaching the feature10 / 10There is no bonus buy and no counter to grind. All four jackpot tiers are live on your first spin
Volatility honesty2 / 10The return is published and nothing else is. No hit frequency, no wheel frequency, and three contradictory figures for the ordinary maximum win
Session survivabilityNot scoredThe band needs a published feature frequency, and twenty years on there is none
Overall5 / 10Average of the three that could be scored, rounded

How to read this. Two, ten and two make fourteen. Divided by three that is 4.67, which publishes as five. The ten is doing heavy lifting here and I would rather say so than hide it.

Five out of ten is not a verdict on whether you should play this game. If you want a shot at a million for the price of 5.30 percentage points, that is a legitimate thing to want, and this is the most famous way to buy it.

What the score says is that you are being asked to buy a lottery ticket whose odds have never been printed. Both return figures are published, the seeds are published, the wheel has twenty segments, and the one number that would let you value the ticket is missing. After twenty years and the largest payout in online slot history, that is a choice rather than an oversight.

There Is No Mega Moolah Demo of the Original

I will not waste your time with a button that does nothing. The original Mega Moolah is not in our free play library and I cannot give you a demo of it. Jackpot games are frequently withheld from demo mode, because a play money balance cannot feed a real jackpot pool.

What we do have is 27 games that sit on the same jackpot network, and most of those are playable for free. They share the four tier wheel and the pooled Mega, so the mechanic is the same even though the base games are not. These eight are a fair sample.

One thing to know before you click any of them. Games Global blocks its free demos in 79 countries, and Slovenia sits on that list alongside Italy, Germany and Croatia. Almost every game below carries that same restriction in our library record, which I checked on 21 October 2026. If you open one from Slovenia you will get a country restriction notice instead of the game.

That block is the supplier’s decision and not a fault on this site, and it covers the free demo only. It says nothing about whether you can play these games for money, which is a separate question answered by your casino rather than by the studio.

A demo of a jackpot game teaches you the base game and nothing about the jackpot, since the wheel in play money mode pays play money. Treat these as a look at the engine rather than as practice.

The Mega Moolah RTP Is Two Numbers, Not One

Every slot keeps a slice of what you stake. A normal modern slot keeps between three and four euros per hundred. Mega Moolah keeps 6.58 euros per hundred and diverts another 5.30 euros into the jackpot pools. The second number is not a cost in the usual sense. It is a transfer.

Those 5.30 points do not go to the casino. They go into four jackpot pools shared across the whole network, and sooner or later one person collects the lot. You are not being overcharged, you are buying a lottery ticket that comes stapled to a slot machine, and the price of the ticket is 5.30 percent of everything you stake.

GameReturnKept per 100 stakedHow it compares
Thunderstruck II96.65%3.35The baseline for an ordinary slot
Starburst96.09%3.91Also ordinary, and the most played slot in Europe
Duck Hunters96.05%3.95A modern high volatility game
Thunderstruck II Mega Moolah92.01%6.69The same 5.30 to the pools, on a weaker base game
Mega Moolah93.42%6.58Just under twice the house edge of the games above it, plus 5.30 to the pools

How to read this. Read the last column as the price of entry to the jackpot, not as a measure of how fair the game is. Whether it is worth paying depends entirely on whether you want the lottery ticket. If you do not, you are paying for something you are not using.

The Mega Moolah Wheel Has Twenty Segments, and One Is the Mega

Here is the part almost nobody prints. The four jackpots are not won on the reels. They are won on a wheel that appears at random during the base game, and when it appears you are guaranteed one of the four.

That wheel carries twenty segments. One of them is the Mega. The rest are split between Mini, Minor and Major, with more of the two small ones than the two large ones. So once the wheel appears, your chance of the million is one in twenty at best, and worse in practice because the segments are not spread evenly.

TierSeeded atSegments on the wheelWhat it means
Mega1,000,000One of twentyThe headline, and the reason the return is 88.12 percent
Major10,000A minority shareLife changing for a week rather than a lifetime
Minor100A larger shareRoughly four hundred spins of your stake back
Mini10A larger shareForty spins of your stake back

How to read this. The segment count is the only part of the jackpot odds anyone publishes. The part that actually decides your chances, how often the wheel appears at all, has never been released by Microgaming or Games Global. Without it, nobody on earth can tell you your odds of the Mega, and anyone who quotes you a number is guessing.

Betting the maximum improves your chance of triggering the wheel, which is the one lever you have. At 6.25 a spin a fifty euro balance lasts eight spins. That is the trap in this game and it is worth naming plainly: the only way to improve your odds is the way that empties your balance fastest.

What a Mega Moolah Spin Is Actually Buying

Strip away the wheel and the base game is a 2006 slot with 25 paylines and an animal theme. Nobody plays it for that. You are paying 5.30 euros per hundred for a shot at a pool that one person somewhere on the network eventually takes, on top of the 6.58 the house keeps.

The honest way to think about it is to compare it with a lottery rather than with a slot. A lottery ticket has a published price and published odds. Mega Moolah has a published price, 5.30 per hundred staked, and no published odds at all. That asymmetry is most of why this review scores what it does.

What Fifty Euros Buys You in Mega Moolah

The stake range is narrow, from 25 cents to 6.25 a spin. At the minimum, fifty euros gives you 200 spins. At the maximum it gives you eight. There is no setting in between that changes the arithmetic below, only how fast you reach it.

Your stakeSpins from 50 eurosKept by the houseSent to the jackpot pools
0.252003.292.65
0.501003.292.65
1.25403.292.65
2.50203.292.65
6.2583.292.65

How to read this. Neither money column moves, because both depend on how much you stake in total rather than on how you divide it. On the same fifty euros a 96 percent slot keeps 2.00 and sends nothing to a pool. What the stake size changes here is how long fifty euros survives, and therefore how many chances the wheel has to appear before you run out.

That last point is the whole bankroll argument for this game. Your odds of the wheel improve with more spins, not with bigger ones, right up until you choose the maximum bet, which improves the trigger chance and shortens the session at the same time. The two levers pull against each other and nobody has published the numbers that would let you balance them.

The Mega Moolah Record Win, and What It Proves

On 7 October 2015 a 26 year old British soldier named Jonathon Heywood won 13,213,838 pounds and 68 pence on Mega Moolah, through a Betway account. Microgaming announced it, the trade press reported it, and it stood as the largest online slot win ever recorded.

It is a real win and I am not going to be sniffy about it. What I will do is put it in proportion, because every page about this game quotes that figure and then stops.

One person won it. The pool that paid him was funded by the eight extra percentage points taken from everyone playing every game on the network, over years. That is how a progressive works and there is nothing dishonest about it. But it does mean the correct way to read a record jackpot is as evidence of how much money passed through the pool, not as evidence of your chances.

If you want the number that would actually inform your decision, it is the frequency of the wheel, and that number has never been published in twenty years.

Twenty Seven Games Feed the Same Jackpot

Our library carries 27 games on the Mega Moolah network, and that is only the ones we list. Every one of them takes its slice of your stake and puts it in the same four pools.

This matters for a reason that is easy to miss. When the Mega finally drops, it almost certainly drops on somebody else, playing a different game, at a different casino, in a different country. You are not competing for a prize attached to your machine. You are contributing to a prize attached to a network.

What the network meansThe practical effect
One shared poolYour stake builds a jackpot that any of the 27 games can pay out
Any casino on the networkThe winner can be at an operator you have never heard of
Any of the four tiersMost wheel appearances pay the Mini or the Minor, not the Mega
Base games differ, odds do notA Megaways grid or a book game on the network still feeds the same wheel
Return varies by titleThunderstruck II Mega Moolah returns 92.01 percent against this game’s 88.12

How to read this. If you have decided you want the jackpot, the sensible move is to pick the network game with the highest published return rather than the one with the loudest counter. Those returns differ by several percentage points and almost nobody checks.

Four Clauses to Check Before You Play It for Money

The game is the same everywhere. The terms wrapped around it are not, and that is where a session quietly gets more expensive. Four things are worth thirty seconds each.

First, the return printed in the game information panel, every time you open the game at a casino you have not used before. Plenty of slots ship in more than one build, and that panel is the only place the figure you are actually playing is shown.

Second, how the game counts toward wagering, and whether buying a feature voids an active bonus. Slots usually count in full, but feature purchases are excluded under most terms and some casinos cancel the bonus outright for one. The wagering terms are where both of those live.

Third, the maximum stake allowed while a bonus is running. It is commonly five euros a spin, and going over it once is enough for a casino to void everything the bonus produced.

Fourth, the cap on what you may withdraw from bonus winnings. A large maximum win means nothing if the terms stop your payout well below it, and that ceiling is printed in the bonus terms rather than in the game.

What an Hour of Mega Moolah Costs

This game has two honest prices and the difference between them is the jackpot. Through the reels alone it returns 88.12 percent. Counting the money that comes back out of the jackpot pools it returns 93.42 percent, and almost all of that second figure is paid to somebody else.

Stake per spinWagered in an hourCounting the jackpots, 93.42%Through the reels only, 88.12%
€0.25€150€9.87€17.82
€0.50€300€19.74€35.64
€1.00€600€39.48€71.28

Six hundred spins an hour. The left column is what the game costs if your share of the jackpot pools comes back to you on average. The right column is what the hour costs while the jackpot does not land, which is what almost every hour looks like.

Where to Play Mega Moolah for Real Money

Five of the 36 casinos I have reviewed record Games Global in the supplier list I pulled from their lobbies, and none of them names Mega Moolah specifically. The jackpot network is carried by far more operators than that, but five is what I can verify from my own notes, so five is what I will print.

BillyBets Casino5 / 10Read the review
Winnerz Casino5 / 10Read the review
Tsars Casino5 / 10Read the review
Zet Casino4 / 10Read the review

How to read this. Not one of them reaches seven. All five score well for game selection and lose the points on bonus terms, withdrawal handling or a license I could not find on a regulator list. On a game where a single win can be seven figures, the withdrawal terms are not a detail.

That last sentence deserves its own line. If you ever do hit a Major or a Mega, the clause that decides whether you are paid in one transfer or in monthly installments is written into the terms you accepted at signup. Read the withdrawal section of whichever casino you choose before you deposit, and my full list of scored casinos shows where each one stands.

I came to this from finance, so a jackpot figure on its own tells me nothing. What I want is the price of the ticket and the odds of the draw, side by side, in euros. On this game I can give you the price exactly and the odds not at all, and I would rather say that than fill the gap with a guess.

Games Global publishes no math sheet for Mega Moolah, so every figure here was cross checked against independent databases, and the record win comes from the trade press report of Microgaming’s own announcement. Where sources contradict each other I have printed all of their answers. I am responsible for everything on this page. If a number no longer holds, write to me and I will check it.

18+. Gambling can be addictive. Progressive jackpots are funded by every player on the network and are won by almost nobody.
