Home » Starburst Slot Review

Starburst is published at 96.09 percent, and the same game is also sold to casinos at 90.05 percent. The tile looks identical either way. I score it 7 out of 10, and the six points it loses are almost entirely about what you are not told.

This is a 2012 NetEnt slot, now under Evolution, built on five reels and three rows with ten fixed paylines that pay in both directions. There is one feature. A Starburst wild lands on the middle three reels, expands to fill its reel, and gives you a respin. Nothing is locked, nothing has to be bought, and that simplicity is the best thing about it.

Below is every figure the studio prints, every figure it leaves out, and the arithmetic on what the six return versions actually cost you. If you only read one section, read the one about the versions.

Starburst at a Glance

Evolution does publish a game page for Starburst, which already puts it ahead of most slots this old. The rows marked as not published are not an oversight on my part, they are simply absent from it.

What it isThe figure
Return to player96.09% on the studio page, with five lower versions in circulation down to 90.05%
Studio and yearNetEnt, now part of Evolution, released June 2012
GridFive reels, three rows, ten fixed paylines that pay from left and right
Stake range0.10 to 100 a spin on the studio page, though casinos narrow it
Maximum win500x your stake per spin or respin, a figure the studio page does not carry
FeatureExpanding wild on reels two, three and four, with up to three respins
VolatilityLow on one line of the studio page and Low to Mid on another
Hit frequency22.6% on the top version, about one paying spin in 4.42, not on the studio page
Feature frequencyNot published
Bonus buyNone, and nothing in the game is gated behind a counter

How to read this. Two things in this table are unusual for a slot of this age. The studio keeps a live page for it, and that page still omits the maximum win. Both of those facts feed the score further down.

The Score, and What Went Into It

Casinos on this site are scored on four published criteria and so are games, on four of their own. Each is marked out of ten and the average is rounded to a whole number, with a half rounding up. Where a studio publishes nothing a criterion can be built from, I leave it unscored and average the rest. The bands are published in my scoring method.

CriterionScoreWhy
Return to player7 / 1096.09 percent sits on the ninety six line the industry used as its default. Fair, and nothing more than fair
Cost of reaching the feature10 / 10There is no bonus buy and no locked level. The only feature in the game arrives on the first wild that lands
Volatility honesty3 / 10The studio page omits the maximum win, the hit frequency and the five lower return versions, and contradicts itself on volatility
Session survivabilityNot scoredThe band needs a published feature frequency. There is none, so I will not invent one
Overall7 / 10Average of the three that could be scored, rounded

How to read this. Seven, ten and three make twenty. Divided by three that is 6.67, which publishes as seven. The parts are printed so you can redo it.

Seven is a good score and the ten is doing a lot of the work. I want to be plain about that. Starburst earns it by being the rare slot that holds nothing back behind a counter or a purchase, and that is worth as much to a small balance as a point of return.

The three is the other half of the story. A studio that still runs a page for this game could add one line listing the six return versions and the whole problem would disappear. Until it does, the most played slot in Europe is sold without its price on the label.

Six Versions of Starburst, and Only One Is on the Label

This is the part that matters, and it applies to the single most played slot in Europe. Starburst does not have one return figure. It has six, and the casino decides which one you sit down at.

Evolution publishes 96.09 percent on its own page for the game and lists no alternatives. The configurations actually shipped to operators run down to 90.05 percent. Between the top and the bottom version there are 6.04 percentage points, and nothing on the game tile, the thumbnail or the title tells you which one you have opened.

VersionHouse edgeCost per 100 stakedHit frequency
96.09%3.91%3.9122.6%
95.05%4.95%4.95Within the 21.2 to 22.8 band
94.05%5.95%5.95Within the 21.2 to 22.8 band
93.05%6.95%6.95Within the 21.2 to 22.8 band
92.05%7.95%7.95Within the 21.2 to 22.8 band
90.05%9.95%9.9521.2%

How to read this. The hit frequency barely moves between versions, which is the clever part. The game feels the same whichever one you are on, because wins land at almost the same rate. What changes is how much those wins are worth, and you will not feel that inside one session.

Here is how to check before you spin. Open the game at your casino, open the information or paytable screen, and read the return figure printed there. It is the version you are actually playing. If the screen shows 90.05, close it and find the same game somewhere else, because you are paying two and a half times the house edge for an identical experience.

I have written before that the same slot can pay differently at different casinos. Starburst is the cleanest proof of it I have found, because the studio keeps a public page, that page prints one number, and five other numbers are in circulation under the same name.

What the Starburst Respin Actually Does

Starburst has no free spins round, no scatter, no multiplier and no bonus to buy. It has one mechanic, and understanding it takes thirty seconds.

The Starburst wild appears only on reels two, three and four. When it lands it expands to cover that whole reel, locks in place, and gives you a respin. If another wild lands during that respin, it expands and locks too, and you get another. Three wild reels is the ceiling, and three respins is the ceiling.

The ten paylines pay from the left and from the right at the same time. That is why a single expanded wild in the middle so often produces a win on both sides of the board at once. It is also why the hit frequency sits above one spin in five, which is high for a slot.

Nothing here is held back from you. There is no counter to grind, no level that unlocks on your fifteenth bonus, no purchase that skips the queue. On the criterion I score for the cost of reaching a feature, that earns the only ten I have given a game so far.

What the Starburst 500x Cap Is Worth, and Why the Studio Does Not Print It

Five hundred times your stake is the ceiling on a single spin or respin, and you reach it by filling the board with bar symbols alongside the wilds. Converted into money, it looks like this.

Your stake500x in cashWhat that stake buys you
0.1050The minimum, and 500 spins from a fifty euro balance
0.50250100 spins from fifty euros
1.0050050 spins from fifty euros
10.005,000Five spins from fifty euros
100.0050,000The studio maximum, where most casinos stop you well short

How to read this. A 500x ceiling is modest by modern standards and that is not a criticism. It is what a low volatility game looks like from the inside. The problem is not the number, it is that Evolution does not print it.

Look at the glance table again. The studio keeps a live page for this game in 2026, lists the return, the grid, the paylines and the stake range, and simply stops before the maximum win. Third party databases fill the gap, and they disagree, offering 500x in one place and 50,000 coins in another. Those describe different things at different coin values, and no studio page exists to settle which is meant.

There is no published figure at all for how often the wild lands, which means nobody can tell you how often the only feature in this game triggers.

How Long Fifty Euros Lasts in Starburst

Fifty euros at the ten cent minimum buys 500 spins. At a hit frequency of 22.6 percent you can expect roughly 113 of those spins to return something, which is about one in every four and a half. On the 90.05 percent version the hit frequency falls to about 21.2 percent, so roughly 106 paying spins instead of 113.

Seven paying spins across a whole session is not something a human being notices. That is exactly why the version you are on is invisible from the inside, and why the difference has to be read rather than felt. Where it shows up is in the arithmetic over time.

Money staked in totalExpected loss at 96.09%Expected loss at 90.05%The gap
1003.919.956.04
50019.5549.7530.20

5,000195.50497.50302.00
10,000391.00995.00604.00

How to read this. Total staked is not the same as money deposited. A fifty euro balance that wins and is replayed can turn over several hundred euros in an evening, which is how a player reaches the lower rows of this table without ever depositing that much. These are long run expectations and no single session will match them.

What You Can Verify About Starburst, and What You Cannot

Evolution keeps a live page for a game released in 2012, which is more than most studios manage. Judge it on what is on that page rather than on the fact that it exists.

FigureOn the studio pageWhat that leaves you
Return to player96.09%Reliable, as far as it goes
The five lower versionsNot mentionedYou cannot learn from the studio that they exist
VolatilityLow in one place, Low to Mid in anotherThe page disagrees with itself
Maximum winAbsentThe ceiling comes from third parties who disagree
Hit frequencyAbsentIt exists in the public record, just not from Evolution
Feature frequencyAbsentNobody can tell you how often the only feature fires
Number of respinsAbsentThree is the accepted figure and the studio confirms none of it

How to read this. A studio that keeps a page current for fourteen years and leaves the maximum win off it has made a choice. The missing line that matters most is the second one, because a player who reads the official page comes away believing there is one Starburst.

The comparison that stings is with a NetEnt game from a year earlier. For Gonzo’s Quest you can find how the 95.97 percent return splits between the base game and the bonus, and the odds of reaching every multiplier level. For Starburst you get one number and a volatility label that argues with itself.

Every Starburst Game Compared

Five Starburst titles sit in our library. They share a name and a gem, and they are not remotely the same bet. The original is a low volatility game with a 500x ceiling. One of its sequels reaches 200,000x.

GameYearReturnMaximum winFree demo

Starburst Galaxy202496.10%25,000xPlay it free
Starburst Tap-a-RooNot recordedNot publishedNot publishedPlay it free
Slingo StarburstNot recordedNot publishedNot publishedPlay it free

How to read this. Starburst XXXtreme is the row to be careful with. Its return rises when you pay for the feature, which means the headline 96.26 percent applies to a game you are not buying into. A ceiling 400 times higher than the original also means a game that behaves nothing like it.

If somebody recommended Starburst to you and you opened XXXtreme, you did not get a harder version of the same game. You got a high volatility slot with a different grid, nine paylines instead of ten and a bonus you can buy. Read the return figure on whichever one you open, every time.

Four Clauses to Check Before You Play It for Money

The game is the same everywhere. The terms wrapped around it are not, and that is where a session quietly gets more expensive. Four things are worth thirty seconds each.

First, the return printed in the game information panel, every time you open the game at a casino you have not used before. Plenty of slots ship in more than one build, and that panel is the only place the figure you are actually playing is shown.

Second, how the game counts toward wagering, and whether buying a feature voids an active bonus. Slots usually count in full, but feature purchases are excluded under most terms and some casinos cancel the bonus outright for one. The wagering terms are where both of those live.

Third, the maximum stake allowed while a bonus is running. It is commonly five euros a spin, and going over it once is enough for a casino to void everything the bonus produced.

Fourth, the cap on what you may withdraw from bonus winnings. A large maximum win means nothing if the terms stop your payout well below it, and that ceiling is printed in the bonus terms rather than in the game.

What an Hour of Starburst Costs

The return figure on its own tells you nothing about what a session costs. What costs you money is the return multiplied by how much you push across the table, and a slot pushes a great deal. Six hundred spins in an hour is an ordinary pace once autoplay is running.

At 96.09 percent the house keeps 3.91 percent of everything staked. Here is what that is worth at three ordinary stakes, using the same model as my cost per hour table.

Stake per spinWagered in an hourHouse edgeCost of the hour
€0.20€1203.91%€4.69
€0.50€3003.91%€11.73
€1.00€6003.91%€23.46

Six hundred spins an hour, the house edge applied to everything wagered in that hour. These are averages over a very long run, not a prediction for one session, and the swings in either direction are far larger than the edge.

The demo runs on a play money balance that resets when you reload. No account, no email address, no deposit. Ten minutes is enough here, because Starburst has one idea and shows it to you quickly.

One practical note, and for once it is good news. Most demos in our library are blocked in dozens of countries. This one carries two restrictions and neither Slovenia, Italy, Germany, Austria, Croatia nor Hungary is among them. It will load for you.

Where to Play Starburst for Real Money

Twenty six of the 36 casinos I have reviewed record NetEnt in the supplier list I pulled from their lobby, so this game is not hard to find. Six of the 26 reach seven out of ten, which is the highest score any casino holds on this site.

HellSpin Casino7 / 10Read the review
20bet Casino7 / 10Read the review

How to read this. The game is identical at all six, so the only thing separating them is what their terms say when you ask for your money back. That, and which return version each has switched on, which no casino advertises and every one of them will show you inside the game.

Playfina takes the link below on the same tiebreak I use everywhere. All six share the highest mark for terms fairness, four of them share the highest for payouts, and Playfina has the best bonus value of those four. The other twenty casinos that carry NetEnt score between four and six, and the full list shows why.

I came to this from finance, so a slot review that tells me a game is charming tells me nothing. What I want is every published number in one place, converted into euros, with the missing ones named rather than guessed at.

The return figure, the grid, the paylines and the stake range on this page come from Evolution’s own game page for Starburst. The six return versions, the hit frequency and the maximum win are not on it, and I have said so wherever they appear. I am responsible for everything published here. If a number no longer holds, write to me and I will check it.

18+. Gambling can be addictive. The demo linked on this page is played with play money that has no cash value and cannot be withdrawn. Return to player describes millions of spins and predicts nothing about a single session. No slot can be beaten with strategy, and the result of every spin is independent of the one before it.
