Home » Legacy of Dead Slot Review

Legacy of Dead ships in five different builds, the best and the worst are twelve percentage points apart, and the game will not tell you which one you opened. I score it 7 out of 10, because what it does publish is unusually generous.

This is Play’n GO’s Egyptian book slot from January 2020, built on the same idea as Book of Dead. Five reels, three rows, ten paylines, and one bonus round that decides everything.

I opened the demo on this site on 22 October 2026 and read all three paytable pages, the full rules document and the settings menu, then checked the studio’s own game page. Here is what each of them gave me.

Legacy of Dead at a Glance

Four sources went into the table below, three of them inside the game itself. The column on the right says which one each figure came from.

FigureWhat it saysWhere I read it
Return to player96.58% as the default, with four lower buildsTwo independent databases. Not printed in the game

The bonus buy row is the best news on this page. The three rows under it are the ones that decide what an evening on this game actually feels like, and all three are empty.

The Score, and What Went Into It

I score a slot on four criteria. Where a studio publishes nothing a criterion can be built from, I leave that criterion unscored, say so here, and average the ones that remain.

CriterionScoreWhy
Return to player996.58 percent sits in the 96.50 to 96.99 band, which is the second highest band I have. The band reads the default build, and the four lower ones are punished in the row below instead
Cost of reaching the feature10No buy button, no ante bet and no counter to feed. Three scatters on an ordinary paid spin opens the whole round, and nothing inside it stays locked
Volatility honesty2No hit frequency, no free spin frequency, no odds on the ceiling, no weighting for the expanding symbol draw, and five return builds the studio never names
Session survivabilityNot scoredThe band needs a published free spin frequency. There is none, so I will not model a spin count and present it as measurement
Overall7 / 10Nine, ten and two, averaged and rounded

Nine plus ten plus two is twenty one, and twenty one divided by three is exactly seven. The parts are printed so you can redo the arithmetic. The full method, with every band written out, sits on the rating method page.

That two is the harshest mark on the page and it is deserved. A game can be fair and still be silent, and this one is both at the same time.

The Legacy of Dead RTP Is Missing From the Game Itself

The rules document behind the help icon is long and careful. It explains unfinished rounds, how payline wins are added together, what happens to a bet mid round, and every control on the interface. It does not contain the letters RTP.

Where I lookedWhat it gave me
The three paytable pages inside the gameNo return figure
The full rules document behind the help iconNo return figure
The settings menuNo return figure
Play’n GO’s own page for the gameNo return figure
Two independent databases96.58%, both of them, to two decimals
The same two, on the lower buildsFour more returns: 94.51%, 91.51%, 87.56% and 84.55%

Both databases also put the ceiling at 5,000x the bet, which is exactly what the coin figure inside the game works out to. That agreement is the reason I am willing to use their return.

The studio’s page is worth a sentence of its own. It gives a release date, a line about an Egyptian theme, a description of the free spins, and a ceiling quoted in coins. No return, no volatility rating, no frequency of any kind.

Every Play’n GO title I have opened behaves this way, so read it as a house habit rather than something specific to this game. The figure exists, your casino chose it, and neither of them is showing it to you.

Five Legacy of Dead Builds, and Twelve Percentage Points Between Them

This is the part that costs real money. The two databases agree on five configurations, and the gap between the top one and the bottom one is larger than the whole house edge of most slots.

BuildReturnWhat a 50 euro turnover costs on average
The default, and the one usually advertised96.58%1.71 euros
Second94.51%2.75 euros
Third91.51%4.25 euros
Fourth87.56%6.22 euros
Fifth84.55%7.73 euros

The right column is my arithmetic from the published builds, not the studio’s. The bottom build takes four and a half times as much from the same turnover as the top one, and nothing on your screen tells you which of the five you are playing.

So what can you actually do about it. In a market where the regulator forces the figure onto the screen, you read it and you are done. Outside one, you have three weak options and no strong one.

You can check whether the casino publishes returns anywhere on its own site. You can ask support in writing and keep the reply, which at least gives you something to point at later. Or you can accept that you are playing blind and size your session as if the build were the bad one.

Legacy of Dead Gives Exact Odds for the Gamble and None for the Slot

Here is the thing that made me stop reading and go back a paragraph. The rules document states two probabilities, to the percentage point, with the fraction spelled out beside each one.

Both of them belong to the gamble round. Call the color of a face down card correctly and your win doubles, on a 50 percent chance the rules write as 1 in 2. Call the suit and it quadruples, on a 25 percent chance written as 1 in 4.

What the rules give you the odds ofThe number they print
Guessing a card’s color in the gamble50 percent, written as 1 in 2
Guessing a card’s suit in the gamble25 percent, written as 1 in 4
Landing three scatters and opening the free spinsNothing
Any single spin paying anything at allNothing
Reaching the 250,000 coin ceilingNothing
The expanding symbol being the one that pays 5,000Nothing

All six rows come from the same rules document, within a few lines of each other. Two of them are answered and four are not.

Now read the sentence that follows those two figures. The rules say the gamble feature will not impact the overall RTP, which is true and which the studio is right to state.

Put the two together and the shape of it is hard to miss. The only part of this game whose odds you are given is the one part that cannot change what the game returns to you.

I am not calling that dishonest. It is a disclosure habit, and it is the same habit across the studio’s catalog. It just means the precision in that rules document is pointed at the wrong thing.

The Legacy of Dead Maximum Win Is Printed in Coins, Which Hides What It Means

The first page of the info screen ends with a line in large capitals. Win up to 250,000 coins, it says, and that is the only form the ceiling ever takes.

Coins are not euros and they are not multiples of your bet. Before that number means anything you have to know how many coins a spin costs, and the screen makes you work that out yourself.

What the screen saysWhat it actually means
Win up to 250,000 coinsThe figure assumes five coins on each of ten lines, so a 50 coin bet
The same ceiling as a multiple5,000x your bet, whatever the coin value
Where the number comes fromTen paylines, each paying 5,000 for five of the top symbol, at five coins a line
In money at the smallest coin value2,500 euros, from a 0.50 spin
In money at the largest bet of 100.00500,000 euros
Odds of getting anywhere near itNot published

The coin figure and the paytable were read inside the game. The conversions are mine, and you can check them in one line: ten lines times 5,000 times five coins is 250,000.

That last line is worth sitting with, because it tells you exactly what the maximum win is. It is not an arbitrary cap bolted onto the game. It is one expanding symbol covering all fifteen positions with the pharaoh.

The pharaoh is one of nine regular symbols that can be drawn for that job, and the tomb is excluded because it is the scatter. The game does not publish how the draw is weighted, so nine is a symbol count and not a probability.

Drop one rung and the arithmetic collapses fast. Anubis pays 1,600 instead of 5,000, so a full screen of Anubis is 1,600x rather than 5,000x, and the ten symbol pays 80.

Eight Legacy of Dead Free Spins, and the Symbol That Carries Them

The bonus is the whole game, and it is built on one unusual symbol. The tomb is both the scatter and the wild, so it pays on its own and substitutes for everything else at the same time.

What landsWhat you get for it
Three tombs anywhere on the reels2x the bet, and eight free spins
Four tombs20x the bet, and eight free spins
Five tombs200x the bet, and eight free spins
Three or more during the roundEight more spins, and a second expanding symbol
Every retrigger after thatEight more spins, and another symbol, up to nine

Read from the rules document and the paytable. The scatter pays on your total bet rather than on a line, which is why those three figures are worth having.

One regular symbol is chosen at random when the round starts, and that choice is the round. When enough of it lands, the rules say it expands to cover all reel positions, and it does not have to appear adjacent to pay.

That second clause is the kind detail in this game. On an ordinary spin a combination has to run from the leftmost reel with no gaps. In the bonus the special symbol pays with gaps allowed and can start on any reel, which is why a round can go from nothing to several hundred times the bet in two spins.

Eight spins is short, and short is the right word for it. You get eight attempts at hitting enough of one symbol, and if the symbol drawn was the ten rather than the pharaoh, those eight attempts are worth a fraction as much.

The nine symbol ceiling is the part the loading screen sells hardest, and it is the part you will almost never see. Nine symbols means eight retriggers inside one running round, each needing three more tombs.

There Is No Bonus Buy in Legacy of Dead

Nothing in the interface sells you a shortcut. No buy button, no ante bet, no side wager that raises your chance of the tombs. In a 2026 lobby that is becoming rare enough to mention.

My method scores this on the trigger ladder rather than on a price. The question it asks is how far the good part of the game sits from your first spin, and here the answer is one ordinary spin that happens to carry three tombs.

GameHow you reach the headline featureScore
Big Bass BonanzaOne scatter trigger opens every level10
Legacy of DeadThree tombs on a paid spin, with nothing locked behind it10
ReactoonzFive separate charges of the Quantum meter6
Big Bass SplashPay 100x the bet, or wait6
Immortal RomanceNo buy, and the best room sits fifteen triggers deep3

The nine expanding symbols are not a locked level, which is why they do not drag this score down. They accumulate inside a running round by chance, not behind a counter you have to feed across sessions.

That distinction matters more than it sounds. A counter remembers what you spent last night and holds the good room hostage until you spend more. Chance inside a round forgets you the moment the round ends, which is fairer and cheaper.

What Fifty Euros Reaches in Legacy of Dead

The bet is built from three dials and the game prints none of the ranges, so I moved each one to both stops. Coin value runs 0.01 to 2.00, coins per line run 1 to 5, and lines run 1 to 10.

That puts the floor at a single cent on one line and the ceiling at 100.00 a spin. Ten lines at the smallest coin value is 0.10, and that is the setting I would treat as the real minimum, because one line ignores the other nine.

What fifty euros isAt ten lines and the smallest coin value, 0.10 a spin
Ordinary spins500 spins
Expected cost of that turnover on the default buildAbout 1.71 euros
Expected cost of the same turnover on the lowest buildAbout 7.73 euros
Spins that pay somethingNobody publishes a hit frequency
Spins that open the free spinsNobody publishes that either
The ceiling in money at this stake500 euros

My arithmetic from the figures above, not the studio’s. Two of the six rows cannot be filled in, and those two are the ones that would tell you how long fifty euros actually lasts.

The 1.71 euro figure needs a warning label. It is what the maths says a fifty euro turnover costs on average across millions of spins, and it is not what your evening will cost. A high volatility book slot can take fifty euros in twenty minutes.

The two empty rows are the whole reason this scores a seven rather than a nine. I can tell you what the game returns and what it pays for five of anything. I cannot tell you how often it pays at all.

Legacy of Dead Against Book of Dead

These two sit in the same lobbies and look like the same game, because in most respects they are. Four years separate them and the differences are smaller than the shared parts.

Both arrive at seven and they do it differently. The older game loses a point on return and the newer one makes it back, while the disclosure mark is identical because the habit never changed.

So the trade is thirty seven hundredths of a percentage point of return against two fewer free spins, which is twenty percent of the round. On raw expectation the newer game wins, and over an evening the shorter round will be the thing you feel.

The nine symbol clause is the real difference and it cuts both ways. It raises what a long round can become and it does nothing at all for the ordinary round that ends after eight spins with one mid paying symbol.

If you want the fuller version of the same argument, the Book of Dead review takes the older game apart the same way and explains how to work out which build your casino installed.

The Rest of the Dead Family

Play’n GO has kept this engine running for a decade and the shelf is crowded. Rise of Dead, Cat Wilde and the Doom of Dead, Ankh of Anubis and Book of Dead Go Collect all have demos on this site.

I have not opened any of them to the standard I use for a review, so I am not going to tell you what they return or how their bonuses behave. Each is likely to ship in several builds, exactly as the two reviewed here do.

The habit to carry across all of them is the same one. Open the rules before the first spin, look for a return figure, and if there is none, treat the game as the lowest build until something tells you otherwise.

Four Clauses to Check Before You Play It for Money

The game is the same everywhere. The terms wrapped around it are not, and that is where a session quietly gets more expensive. Four things are worth thirty seconds each.

First, the return printed in the game information panel, every time you open the game at a casino you have not used before. Plenty of slots ship in more than one build, and that panel is the only place the figure you are actually playing is shown.

Second, how the game counts toward wagering, and whether buying a feature voids an active bonus. Slots usually count in full, but feature purchases are excluded under most terms and some casinos cancel the bonus outright for one. The wagering terms are where both of those live.

Third, the maximum stake allowed while a bonus is running. It is commonly five euros a spin, and going over it once is enough for a casino to void everything the bonus produced.

Fourth, the cap on what you may withdraw from bonus winnings. A large maximum win means nothing if the terms stop your payout well below it, and that ceiling is printed in the bonus terms rather than in the game.

What an Hour of Legacy of Dead Costs

The return figure on its own tells you nothing about what a session costs. What costs you money is the return multiplied by how much you push across the table, and a slot pushes a great deal. Six hundred spins in an hour is an ordinary pace once autoplay is running.

At 96.58 percent the house keeps 3.42 percent of everything staked. Here is what that is worth at three ordinary stakes, using the same model as my cost per hour table.

Stake per spinWagered in an hourHouse edgeCost of the hour
€0.20€1203.42%€4.10
€0.50€3003.42%€10.26
€1.00€6003.42%€20.52

Six hundred spins an hour, the house edge applied to everything wagered in that hour. These are averages over a very long run, not a prediction for one session, and the swings in either direction are far larger than the edge.

Play Legacy of Dead Free

The demo on this site runs the same build as the real money game, on play money that resets when you reload. No account and no deposit. It is where every figure above was read, and it is where you can confirm that the return really is absent.

Try the Legacy of Dead DemoFree play, no account, no deposit. Open the help icon, find the two gamble probabilities, then look for one anywhere else in the document.

One practical use for the demo. Draw the expanding symbol a few times in free spins and you will see how much of this game is decided by which symbol came out, long before anything else happens.

Where to Play Legacy of Dead for Real Money

Play’n GO appears in the supplier list of twenty five of the 36 casinos I have reviewed, which I pulled from their own lobbies rather than from their marketing. Seven of those twenty five reach seven out of ten, the highest score any casino holds here.

CasinoScoreGame selectionTerms fairnessFull review

Five of the seven are shown. Every score is the average of four criteria and every one of them rounds to seven, so the choice has to be made under the rounding rather than on it.

Playfina takes it by a margin small enough to feel uncomfortable about. It sits at 7.25 before rounding alongside National, the two match on terms fairness at six and on payouts at eight, and bonus value splits them seven against six.

Carry one habit in with you, and on this game it matters more than usual. Open the rules before your first spin and look for a return. If one has appeared, read it and trust it over this page. If none has, you are playing the same blind build I was.

I came to this from finance, which is probably why I read a casino the way I read a contract. The marketing sits on the homepage, and the clause that decides whether you get paid sits twelve pages down.

I am responsible for everything published here. For this review I read three paytable pages and the whole rules document, moved all three bet dials to both stops because the game prints no ranges, and then checked the studio’s own page and found a release date and a ceiling in coins. The five return figures are the only numbers on this page I could not take from a primary source, and I have said so everywhere they appear. If Play’n GO ever publishes a return for this game, send it to me and I will rescore the review and date the change.

18+. Gambling can be addictive. A 96.58 percent return is the best of five builds and a long run average across millions of spins, so it describes no single session, including yours. A game that publishes no hit frequency and no feature frequency is one you cannot budget for, so decide what an evening costs before you start rather than after.
