Keno Tips and Tricks

Keno has three decisions in it, and two of them cost nothing either way. Knowing which one carries the money is the difference between a cheap evening and an expensive one.

The draw itself is fixed mathematics. Eighty numbers, twenty drawn, identical at every casino on earth. Nothing you mark on the ticket changes what the machine does next.

What is not identical is the pay table, and the keno guide on this site shows how far it moves the price. This page is the procedure for using that fact in the two minutes before you stake anything.

Three Decisions, and Only One of Them Has a Price

Here is the whole decision set, with what each one is actually worth. Two of the three are about comfort rather than cost, and most keno advice spends its time on those two.

The decisionWhat it changesWhat it is worth
Which pay table you sit atThe house edge, directly15.3 percentage points
How many numbers you markHow often a ticket pays and how big the payouts areNothing on its own. It reshapes the session
Which numbers you markNothing whatsoeverZero, in every direction

That figure is the pay table range published on the keno guide here, where the same game runs anywhere from a 20.4 percent edge to a 35.7 percent one depending only on what the operator decided to pay.

Read that top row again, because it is unusual. On a slot the gap between a good build and a bad one is a few points. Here it is more than fifteen, and it is set by a number printed on a panel most players never open.

The One Minute Pay Table Check

Every operator writes its own keno pay table, and no lobby I have looked at displays it on the tile. So the check has to happen inside the game, and it takes about a minute.

StepWhat you are doing
1Open the game in demo mode, before any deposit decision
2Open the information or paytable panel, usually behind an “i” button
3Decide how many numbers you intend to mark, and find that row
4Write down what the top catch pays and what a middling catch pays
5Repeat at a second casino and compare the same two figures

Step five is the one everybody skips, and it is the only step that produces a decision. A single pay table in isolation tells you nothing, because there is no advertised standard to judge it against.

If the game has no paytable panel at all, that is your answer. A game that will not show you its prices before you stake is not one to stake at, and keno makes that easy to check because the demo costs nothing.

What One Row on That Table Is Worth

The keno guide here holds two lower prizes fixed and moves only the top one, which isolates exactly what a single row of the pay table is worth. Put money against it and the stakes become obvious.

What the top catch paysReturned per euroHouse edgeCost of 1,000 euros of turnover
700.64 euros35.7%357 euros
900.70 euros29.5%295 euros
1200.80 euros20.4%204 euros

The payouts, returns and edges all come from the keno guide here. The last column is my arithmetic on the edge rather than on the rounded return, so 35.7 percent of a thousand euros is 357. The gap between the top and bottom rows is 153 euros, bought or lost by one number on a panel.

That is the entire argument for the one minute check. Nothing else available to a keno player moves 153 euros, and the check that finds it is free and takes less time than reading a bonus term.

Be clear about what the better table still is, though. At 20.4 percent it remains the most expensive game in the casino by a distance, and the comparison here is between bad and worse rather than between good and bad.

How Many Spots Decides How the Session Feels, Not What It Costs

Marking more numbers does not buy you a better price, and the keno guide sets that out. What it does buy is a completely different rhythm, and that is worth choosing deliberately rather than by habit.

Numbers markedRounds between catching half your spots or betterWhat a hundred rounds looks like
21 in 2Something lands about every other round
61 in 6A steady drip, several times in a hundred
101 in 15Six or seven in a hundred rounds
201 in 211Probably nothing at all

The frequencies are published on the keno guide here. The right column is my arithmetic on a hundred rounds, and it is the part people feel rather than calculate.

So the twenty spot ticket is not a bolder version of the two spot ticket. It is a lottery ticket wearing the same clothes, and a hundred rounds of it will usually return nothing at all before the balance is gone.

My own preference is the low end, for a reason that has nothing to do with edge. A ticket that pays something every few rounds lets a fixed amount of money last long enough to be entertainment, which is the only thing keno is for.

Compare Two Lobbies Before You Deposit, Not After

Everything above only works if you do it in the right order. A pay table read after the deposit is a piece of trivia. The same reading done before it is the only real decision in the game.

The practical version is short. Open the keno demo at two casinos you are considering, mark the same number of spots on both, and write down the same two payouts from each panel.

Then treat the difference as money rather than as a number. If one table pays 70 for the top catch and another pays 90, the second one is worth about 62 euros to you across a thousand euros of turnover, and that is before you have placed a single ticket.

If both panels are hidden, neither casino has earned the deposit. There are enough operators to choose from that an unreadable price is a reason to move on rather than a hurdle to accept.

The Tips That Are Not Tips

Most keno advice is a list of habits dressed as strategy. It is worth naming them, because recognizing one saves you the trouble of testing it.

The adviceWhat it actually does
Play numbers that have been coldNothing. The draw has no memory
Play numbers that are running hotThe same nothing, from the other direction
Keep the same ticket every roundSaves you some tapping, changes no odds
Spread your picks across the gridLooks tidier, changes no odds
Play more rounds to grind the edge downReverses it. More rounds means more turnover at the same edge
Read the pay table before you stakeThe only item on this list worth money

Five of these six are free to follow and free to ignore. The last one is worth up to 153 euros per thousand staked, which is the whole imbalance of the game in one table.

There is a reason the useless advice is more popular. Picking numbers feels like participation, and reading a payout panel feels like paperwork. The game is built around that preference.

What I Would Actually Do

Keno is the most expensive game I write about, and no tip changes that. What the list below does is make sure you are paying the lower of the available prices and getting a session out of it.

The decisionWhat I do
Before depositingOpen the demo at two casinos and compare the same payout row
Which tableThe better of the two, and if both hide the panel, neither
How many spotsThe low end, so the balance survives long enough to be entertainment
Which numbersWhichever ones I like. It genuinely does not matter
How longA fixed number of rounds, decided before the first ticket
With a bonus liveNever, because fast clearing on a 20 to 35 percent edge is the expensive kind of fast

My own practice. Only the first two rows change what the game costs, and the fourth row is on the list because people spend most of their attention there.

One habit matters more here than on any other game on this site. Decide what the evening costs before you open the lobby, because an edge in the twenties empties a balance faster than anything else you can click.

How I Checked These Numbers

The pay table range, the returns, the house edges and the catch frequencies all come from the keno guide on this site, which carries the date each was last checked.

The euro columns are mine and each is a single multiplication on the published edge rather than on the rounded return. A 35.7 percent edge on a thousand euros of turnover is 357 euros, and the same thousand at 20.4 percent is 204.

The hundred round column in the spot table is also mine, converting the published frequencies into something you can picture. A 1 in 15 frequency across a hundred rounds is six or seven landings, and the exact figure will wander either side of that.

One thing is deliberately missing. I have not named a casino with a good keno pay table, because no lobby publishes one and the figure can change without notice. The check belongs in your hands, a minute before you deposit.

Where to Go Next

The decisions are above. These pages carry the prices behind them.

Where to Play Keno for Real Money

The pay table is written by the operator, which makes the choice of casino the only lever on this page with a price attached. Each name here has a full review behind it, with all four marks written out.

I came to this from finance, where nobody asks whether an instrument feels lucky. They ask what it costs to hold and for how long. Keno is the clearest case on this site of a price that is set by a document rather than by the game.

I am responsible for everything published here. The pay table range, the returns and the catch frequencies come from the keno guide on this site, which carries the date each was last checked. The euro figures are my arithmetic on the published edges and every one is a single multiplication. If one stops holding, write to me and I will correct it and date the change.

18+. Gambling can be addictive. Nothing on this page makes keno cheap, because even the better pay table keeps more than a fifth of everything staked. What the page can do is stop you paying the higher of two prices for the same draw, and that check takes a minute and costs nothing. Decide the stake and the number of rounds before you open the lobby, and treat a withdrawal as the end of the session rather than an interruption of it.
