Blackjack is the only game on this site where the way you play changes what it costs. On a roulette wheel every decision carries the same price, so advice about bet selection is decoration. Here the decisions are the game, and getting them right is worth more than any rule on the felt.
That is the honest divide, and it is why this page looks different from the one about roulette. Basic strategy is real and it is measurable. Staking plans are not, and card counting does not survive the trip to a screen.
Every figure below is either arithmetic from the composition of a deck or a number read out of a casino’s own terms. No casino has paid to appear here.
The Ten Decisions That Carry the Value
| Hand | Correct play | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A pair of aces | Always split | Two hands starting at eleven, instead of one hand starting at twelve |
| A pair of eights | Always split | Sixteen is the worst total at the table, and two eights give you a way out of it |
| A pair of tens | Never split | Twenty is the second best hand in the game, and splitting trades it for two unknowns |
| A pair of fives | Never split | Treat it as a ten and double against a dealer two through nine |
| Hard eleven | Double | Against anything from a two to a ten |
| Hard thirteen to sixteen | Stand | Against a dealer two through six, because the dealer is the one who has to draw |
| Hard twelve | Stand against four, five or six | Hit it against a two or a three, which is the exception most players get wrong |
| Hard twelve to sixteen | Hit | Against a dealer seven or higher, where standing concedes the hand |
| Soft eighteen, ace and seven | Hit | Against a nine, a ten or an ace, where eighteen is not good enough |
| Insurance, any hand | Never | About 7.5 percent against you, the worst bet available at the table |
Basic strategy for a multi deck game where the dealer stands on soft seventeen. It is a lookup table derived from the deck, not a system, and no casino forbids keeping it open beside you.
These ten cover most of the money. The full chart adds another fifty or so situations, each worth a fraction of a point, and you can keep it open on screen while you play. Nobody will stop you, because even perfect play leaves the house ahead.
Insurance Is the Most Expensive Button on the Table
It is offered as protection, which is a good piece of naming. What it actually is, is a side bet on the dealer holding a blackjack, priced badly.
Work it through. When an ace shows, the dealer completes a blackjack a little under 31 percent of the time. Insurance pays 2 to 1. Stake one unit and you win two about 31 percent of the time and lose one the other 69, which averages out to roughly 7.5 percent against you on an eight deck game.
That is more expensive than any main bet in the building, and it is offered at the exact moment you feel most exposed. Decline it every time, including when you are holding a blackjack yourself.
Pick the Table Before You Pick the Play
Here is the ranking nobody puts in a tips article. Choosing the right table is worth more than playing the right way, and both are worth infinitely more than any staking plan.
A table that pays 6 to 5 on a blackjack instead of 3 to 2 costs you 1.39 percentage points before you have made a single decision. Perfect basic strategy is worth roughly the same again against a player who guesses. A betting system is worth nothing at all. So the order is simple: read the payout, then the soft seventeen rule, then sit down and play the chart. Every rule is priced on the blackjack page.
Why Staking Plans Do Nothing Here
Doubling after a loss, raising after a win, stepping a sequence: all of it decides how your money is spread across hands, and none of it touches the percentage charged on each hand. The arithmetic is identical to roulette, and I set it out in full on the roulette systems page.
Blackjack adds one extra reason to ignore them. Your edge changes hand by hand depending on what you are dealt, so a plan that raises the stake on a schedule will sometimes put the most money on the worst hands. It is the opposite of what a card counter does, dressed in the same clothes.
Card Counting Does Not Travel Online
Counting works because the cards already dealt tell you something about the cards still to come. Software blackjack deals every hand from a freshly shuffled virtual shoe, so nothing carries over and the count sits at zero forever.
Live tables look more promising and are built to close the same door. Continuous shufflers and deep cuts keep the shoe from reaching the depth where a count becomes worth anything. Treat counting as a casino floor technique that does not survive the move to a screen.
Why Your Bonus Will Not Let You Play It
Blackjack is the cheapest game in the lobby and the bonus terms are written to keep borrowed money off it. Seven of the casinos I review count table games as nothing at all toward a wagering requirement: National Casino, Spinanga, HellSpin, DragonSlots, BillyBets, SafeCasino and Spinline.
Playfina is the only exception, at 5 percent, which means twenty euros of blackjack counts as one euro of turnover. If blackjack is what you came for, decline the welcome offer and keep your balance withdrawable. The sum behind that advice is on the page about whether to take the bonus at all.
Drill It for Free First
Blackjack rewards practice more than any other game in the building, because the mistakes are decisions rather than luck. Demo tables deal the same odds with play money, so you can run the chart until the right play stops needing thought. There is a full library of free casino games on this site.
How I Checked These Numbers
The strategy comes from the composition of a multi deck shoe with the dealer standing on soft seventeen, which is the standard reference set. The insurance figure is arithmetic you can repeat: two to one odds against a dealer who completes the hand a little under 31 percent of the time.
The casino facts are different in kind. Each comes from a full review on this site, read out of the operator’s own terms, with the date it was last read recorded on the review itself.
Where to Go Next
The chart is above. These pages carry the rest of the arithmetic.
Where to Play Blackjack for Real Money
Every edge on this page depends on the table letting you use it, and the rule set on offer is chosen by the casino long before the dealer arrives. Each name here has a full review behind it, with all four marks written out.
FAQ About Blackjack Tips and Strategy
Do blackjack strategies actually work?
Basic strategy does, and it is the only one that does. It takes a player who guesses down to the 0.43 percent the rule set charges. Staking plans like the Martingale change nothing at all.
What is the single most important rule to memorize?
Always split aces and eights, and never split tens. Those three decisions come up often enough to matter and are the ones casual players get wrong most reliably.
Should I take insurance when the dealer shows an ace?
Never. The dealer completes a blackjack about 31 percent of the time with an ace showing, and insurance pays 2 to 1, which leaves roughly 7.5 percent against you on an eight deck game.
Is it worth memorizing the whole chart?
You do not have to. Ten decisions carry most of the value and the rest can sit open beside you, because basic strategy is public and no casino forbids it at the table.
Does card counting work on online blackjack?
No. Software tables shuffle a fresh shoe before every hand, so the count never leaves zero, and live tables use continuous shufflers or deep cuts for the same reason.
Should I change my bet size after a win or a loss?
No. Every hand is dealt from a fresh shoe, so the previous result tells you nothing. A staking plan only changes how fast the same edge is applied to your money.
Which table should I look for?
One that pays 3 to 2 on a blackjack and where the dealer stands on soft 17. The blackjack page prices every rule, and the payout alone is worth more than every tip here.
Can I use a bonus to play blackjack?
Rarely. Seven of the casinos I review count table games as nothing toward wagering, and the one exception counts them at 5 percent, which the bonus arithmetic puts in euros.
Is practicing in demo mode useful?
Yes, more than for any other game. Blackjack rewards correct decisions, so free hands let you drill the chart until the right play is automatic before money is involved.
How often are these figures checked?
The strategy and the insurance arithmetic come from the composition of a deck and do not expire. The casino facts beside them come from reviews that each carry their own last read date in the review index.
Who Wrote This

I came to this from finance, which is probably why I like blackjack more than I like most of what is on a casino floor. It is the one table where a correct answer exists, it is published, and nobody is allowed to stop you using it.
I am responsible for everything published here. Every figure on this page is either arithmetic you can repeat yourself or a number read out of an operator’s own pages. If you find one that no longer holds, write to me.
18+. Gambling can be addictive. Basic strategy reduces what blackjack costs, it does not make it profitable, and the house keeps its edge on every rule set in this market. Each percentage here is a long run average that describes thousands of hands and tells you almost nothing about tonight. The only reliable way to control what a session costs is to decide the amount before you start.
